Best Practices for Creating Stickers
People love critters!
Creating viral sticker packs is part science and part art.
When people are searching though the iOS app store for stickers they are looking for a way to express themselves to their friends.
Sticker packs allow people to express a level of individuality that extends beyond the sticking out tongue face emoji we all know and love.
So what goes into making a great sticker packer? There are a few components:
Originality
Timeliness
Breadth
Originality
This means doing something different, something that’s new or hasn't been done to death. I promise you the world does not need another cat sticker pack... While people love critters and animals, follow the road less traveled.
Do some search, find some niche areas that where there aren't 100 sticker packs, while there are hundreds of cat sticker packs, how many goldfish or turtle sticker packs are there?
Or maybe you can create a completely new pack with critters not from this earth! Your limit is your imagination.
Timeliness
This is a big one. People LOVE custom stickers, especially those that line up well with current events and happenings in the world. Creating a sticker pack in time for the Superbowl or another major sporting event is always a good idea.
Seasonal sticker packs are great as well. Is it -17 degrees outside? Create a sticker pack that reflects that. Is the New Year approaching? Create a sticker pack that allows people to celebrate the New Year in a different way.
Breadth
The key to longevity of a sticker pack is the breadth of expression you can provide to your users. Throughout the course of the day, we feel happy, sad, tired, angry, hungry, annoyed, giggly, sick. The list can go on, ensure that your pack covers all these various emotions and feelings people have. The more utility people can get out of your pack, the more likely they are to buy it.
In Closing
There is no one right answer for what makes a sticker pack go viral or shoot to the top of the charts, but by ensuring you have a strong mix of originality, timeliness and breadth of expression - you are already putting your best foot forward.
